Wedding traditions are part of what make these romantic affairs more memorable. In fact, many wedding guests look forward to the first kiss or the lifting of the veil with nostalgic excitement. Tossing garters and bouquets, walking under showers of confetti and multi-tiered cakes are, however, rather tame in comparison to some of the unusual traditions that hail from times past or from deeply cultural lands. The following traditions are some of the lesser known ones that brides are, undoubtedly, quite happy to do away with:

  • Put a sugar cube into the bride’s glove to sweeten the marriage, according to Greek culture.
  • A spider in the wedding dress equals good luck!
  • The English traditionally believe that the best day to marry is on a Wednesday and the worst is on a Saturday.
  • The Hindu culture rejoices when it rains on a wedding day as it is believed to spell good fortune.
  • In Egypt, the other women pinch the bride to increase her luck!
  • Swedish brides put a gold coin from their mother and a silver coin from the father into each of their shoes for financial prosperity.
  • A sapphire stone in the wedding ring is symbolic of marital bliss, while a pearl in the engagement ring signifies sadness.
  • Danish couples would traditionally cross-dress with the belief that this would confuse the evil spirits. We are sure they were not the only ones that got confused.
