The option of replacing the sweet wedding tiers with savoury options may not appeal to everyone, but is certainly becoming more and more popular among modern brides and grooms. After a heavy meal, many guests simply cannot handle the richness or sweetness of a generous portion of cake. This trend is forcing caterers, wedding coordinators and engaged couples that are planning their big day to become more creative in their approach to the traditional wedding cake.
Savoury wedding ‘cakes’ can be constructed to resemble a multi-tiered cake, finished off with the romantic decorations and added extras to suit your wedding theme or colour scheme. By doing this, the bridal couple does not have to sacrifice the style and beauty of the more traditional cake in any way. This also helps the wedding guests to make the mental link between the savoury display and the cake it is replacing. This is important, as some guests really enjoy all of the traditional elements of a wedding day.
The following ideas are just some novel inspirations to get your creative juices flowing and to make your savoury wedding cake gorgeous:
- Cheese – whole wheels of cheese decorated and garnished with rich green fig preserve, dried apricots, salted and unsalted biscuits, bottles of port and sherry can make for an impressive display. Many cheeses are white or very pale yellow on the outside. If you use such cheeses, your arrangement will have a distinctly “wedding cake” look. Also, cheese and biscuits are a popular after-dinner favourite, so you can be sure that most of your guests will enjoy it.
- Sushi – colourful, mouth-watering sushi and sashimi look stunning when arranged in a tiered pyramid, perhaps on a glass or mirror stand. This is a real treat for your guests and certainly adds a sense of glamour to your wedding. Ensure that a professional sushi chef creates your masterpiece so that your sushi looks fresh and tasty.
- Pies – create and medley of tasty mini pies that are not too heavy. Include pork, lamb and mint, cheese and onion, and so on. After they have been dancing for a while, guests are sure to become peckish. Encourage them to stroll past your wedding cake for a tasty top-up.
- Snacks – construct your wedding ‘cake’ from delicious finger snacks that can be picked off at leisure. Think of including vegetable spring rolls, prawn tails, corn fritters, crab cakes, mini gourmet pizzas, etc… This must be garnished well to create an attractive piece, and to avoid it all being the same colour and texture.
- Seafood – offer your guests a luxurious platter of oysters, caviar, calamari, mussels and prawns. This must be done tastefully, and will also create great snacks during the course of your celebratory party.
- Pizza – for a fun approach, pile pizza slices into a cake shape, and urge everyone to ‘dig in’ and enjoy.
- Breads – the variety of baked bread is inspiring. In addition, your selection of breads can be baked in any style and shape. Be sure to hire a professional baker to create an impressive wedding cake of breads and surround this with farm-fresh butter, organic jams, preserves, cheeses and other tasty spreads.
