Wedding themes are the ideal way to include your guests and transport them to a fantasy world. A theme like Arabian Nights is especially effective because it is so fantastical and romantic. Yet, it maintains a distinctly exotic elegance, a sense of adventure and intrigue. Couples that are getting married in the western world, or who are from countries like Australia, are especially ideal for this theme as it is guaranteed to get their friends and family excited about being a part of this exciting scene. For the full effect, inform your guests of the Arabian flavour of your event and ask them to participate in creating the ambience by dressing accordingly. This will also make your big day more special and memorable to them.

Colours and Designs
An Arabian Nights theme evokes images of intense reds, lavish purples, dazzling gold and midnight blues. These powerful, deep colours are ideal portrayals of the royal families and palaces in Arab countries. Arabian textiles are usually intricately textured with beautiful embroidery and embellishing. Threads, beads, sequins and mirrors are used extensively to accomplish this look and feel, as are velvets and patterned textiles. By using these gorgeous colours and fabrics in your venue, you will easily accomplish the mystical Arabian Nights effect.

Invitations
Custom-made mini Persian rugs (acting as enchanting magic carpets) or brass genie lamps are the perfect way to convey your wedding invitations to your friends and family. Receiving these will let them know about your theme and get them excited about the adventure awaiting them. If you prefer a more conventional style of invitation, simply use the rich colours and, perhaps, textures typical of Arab textiles to convey your theme effectively. In addition, it is important to include that guests should dress according to the theme on the invitation so that they have ample time to prepare.

Attire
Arabian dress styles are rather distinctive and are usually quite easy to find in most cities and towns. As the bridal couple, you may feel hesitant about dressing up in full Arab array. In that case, you may still consider donning your entourage (bridesmaids, groomsmen, flowergirls, etc…) in belly dancing outfits, turbans, Burkas, silky baggy trousers, belts, sleeveless princess tops and bejewelled headbands, for example. Of course, there are also gorgeous wedding outfits for couples that do want to go ‘all out’ in their Arabian Nights wedding theme.

Décor
The décor of your venue is what sets the scene as soon as the guests arrive. Therefore, ensure that a visual spectacular awaits them. Use a Moroccan or Arabian marquee as your actual venue, if possible, and scatter large cushions or ottomans on the floor. Find and use as many Persian-style rugs as possible, covering the floor in rich reds, blues and gold.

Food and Beverages
Your Arabian Nights wedding menu is sure to be a spicy taste sensation. Include the following ingredients on the menu:

  • Cous cous
  • Lentils
  • Olives
  • Mint
  • Pita breads
  • Feta cheese
  • Fresh fruit or vegetable kebabs
  • Hummus
  • Falafels
