A nautical theme is appropriate if one or both of you are involved in boating or if it is a shared passion. It is simultaneously formal, elegant and fun, which creates a great ambience for your wedding day. Themes are extremely popular, and encourage the family and friends enjoying your wedding celebrations to be involved in a more direct, participative way.

Theme Colours
Obviously, navy and white are the main nautical colours and will achieve your theme effectively. Add touches of gold and / or brass to accentuate and add depth to your theme colour scheme. This combination reflects the colours and embellishments of the traditional sailor and captain uniforms.

Attire
The bride can incorporate gold and navy into her traditional white wedding gown by including it in her accessories (shoes, fascinator, jewellery, etc…). In addition, a sailor hat with a netted veil sewn in is sweet and quirky, sure to make guests remember your outfit for many years to come.

Give the groom and his groomsmen the opportunity to prove that there really is nothing quite like a man in uniform by having them don formal navy uniforms or sailor suits. Alternatively, simply get white trousers with navy jackets to accomplish a similar look.

Bridesmaids will look gorgeous in knee-length tailored dresses with cute sailor hats and court shoes.

Décor
Think of a cruise liner when approaching the matter of your wedding venue décor. This usually involves perfectly ironed white linens, fabric napkins and crystal glassware. Napkin rings, cutlery and placemats may have touches of gold and / or brass to finish off the look. In addition, look around at old antique shops or nautical outlets to find old brass bells, compasses, thick ropes, lighthouses, anchors, huge boat steering wheels and other appropriately nautical items to display around your venue. You may also choose to include some ocean elements, such as shells, fishing nets and sea sand, if you want to include this aspect in your theme.

Instead of a traditional all-floral centrepiece or bouquet, use seashells and rope amongst plain white flowers for a really different, nautical ambience. Centrepieces may comprise solely of seashells and starfish in flat glass bowls. Alternatively, place a model of a ship or a giant brass bell in the centre of your table for a more fun, unique approach.

Food & Beverages
Use the ocean as inspiration for your menu, including plenty of fresh seafood and a definite touch of glamour. Lobster, crabs and prawns would not be out of place on a ship, but fresh grilled fish is just as suitable. Champagne is the ideal refreshment, as a bottle of this bubbly delight is usually used to christen the boats before their first ocean journey.

Guest Favours
Treat your guests to a memorable gift so that your nautical-themed wedding remains in their hearts and minds for a long time. Some ideas include:

  • A mini lighthouse (as a doorstop or ornament)
  • A compass
  • Candle holders in the shape of a lighthouse or boat
  • A plate made out of a large shell
  • Their very own captain’s hat
